I love banisters that serve an aesthetic purpose as well as a useful function. While these metal handrails are not the most detailed I have seen, the spiral bases add a flourish to an otherwise ordinary feature. As I looked at them closely, I thought that snapping the photo while I knelt down would enable me to capture the spiralling away effect. I also wondered how many passers-by would notice the unconventional beauty of these rails as they passed along the cobbled Amsterdam street, most likely gazing at the canal on their left.
